Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth B. Estes LINCOLNTON. GA Entered into rest Friday, September 13, 2013, at home. Elizabeth Brown Estes, 86, wife of Charles L. Estes, Jr., was born in Whitmire, S.C., and lived for 64 years in Lincolnton, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Rev. James H. Brown and Grace Sullivan Brown of SC. Elizabeth, a graduate of Chester High School in SC, graduated from Lander University in Greenwood, and received her Masters in Education from the University of Georgia. "Lib" was a beloved and dedicated High School English, Drama and Writing teacher for many years in Lincolnton. She was a Star Teacher in 1972 and 1973, and Member of Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education. Lib was a respected business owner of The Little Shop women and children's clothing store in Lincolnton for 25 years, a member of the Fort James Chapter of Colonial Dames, and recipient of the 1980 Governor's Project Competition Community Leader Award for Georgia. An award-winning freelance writer and editor with many published articles and poems, including in Family Circle and Guideposts magazines, Lib was past Area Director for Georgia Writers, Inc., a member of the Poetry Society of Georgia, the Southeastern Writers Association, a long-time teacher of creative writing at Augusta College Dept. of Continuing Education and the driving force behind the longest-running writers' group in Augusta. Organizer and past president of Lincoln County Friends of the Library, Lib was a life-long learner and advocate for reading and a member of the Candler Circle at Lincolnton Methodist Church since 1954. Lib was on the Board of Directors of the CSRA Compassionate Friends Organization. She enjoyed yoga, reading and writing and served her community and state tirelessly in many ways throughout her long, productive life. Family members include her son, Charles L. Estes III of Marlborough, MA ; her daughter, Priscilla A. Estes of Yardley, PA ; grandchildren: Margaret Mei Estes of Marlborough, MA, Isabel Brown Estes of Brooklyn, NY, and Benjamin Lo Estes of Marlborough, MA; nieces: Connie Brown of Reston, VA, Elizabeth Hayward of Yonkers, NY, and Susan F. Johnson of Fairmont, N.C. Predeceasing her are one daughter, Patricia L. Estes, and one son, Steven H. Estes; and four sisters and one brother. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, September 16, 2013 at the Lincolnton United Methodist Church with Rev. James Bocian and Rev. John M. "Dusty" Rhodes officiating. Interment will follow in the Lincolnton City Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Tommy Rankin, Danny Dawkins, Manis Davis, Paul Wulfing, Vance Tarver, William Cartledge, Thomas Dawkins and Joey Joiner. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Friends of the Library and the Yoga Exercise Group. If so desired memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of the Library, P.O.
