Henry Ansel Lagroon, 93, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at Hospice House and Palliative Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood, SC. Born in Ware Shoals, SC, he was the second son of the late Edward Olin Lagroon and the late Sadie Lois Butler Lagroon of Callison, SC. Early in life, he was also known as “Bubba” to his family and close relatives. He was preceded in death by his brothers Billy Edward Lagroon, George Larry Lagroon and a son-in-law, Carl Lee “Sandy” Wilkie.

   He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 73 years, Julia Eugenia “Jean” Holloway Lagroon, his daughters Cathy Lagroon Wilkie, Cheryl Lagroon Newby (Darrell), Joyce Lagroon Goff (Chuck), and his son, Richard Henry Lagroon (Angela). He was a proud grandfather to Cary Wilkie (Julie), Grant Wilkie (Ashley), Dusty Newby (Julie), Forest Newby (Whitney), Jonathan Goff (Jillian), Megan Goff Thomas (Dustin), Leanne Lagroon Caughman (Nick) and Ryan Lagroon (Taylor). He was the Great-grandfather to Camden Wilkie, Avery Wilkie, Olin Newby, River Newby, Evi Newby, Ezra Newby, Eliza Newby, Bennett Goff, Holden Goff, Davis Goff, Hampton Wilkie, Dawson Thomas and Corbin Thomas.

   As a young boy, Ansel lived in Greenwood, SC before his family moved to Callison, SC where he helped his father with farming and operating a saw mill, learning the virtues of hard work. He attended Edgefield County Schools and graduated from Edgefield High School in 1951. As teenagers, Ansel and his two brothers enjoyed playing music together and would often play at school events and talent shows. He learned to play a guitar and a lap steel guitar.

   Ansel served in the United States Army from March 8, 1955 to March 7, 1957, completing his basic training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC and later stationed at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. After an honorable discharge from the Army, he and Jean moved to McCormick, SC where they lived for about 68 years until moving to Ansley Glen of Greenwood – Assisted Living.

   Ansel was a longtime member of Republican United Methodist Church in McCormick, SC. After working for more than thirty years at the Milliken mill in McCormick, he retired and later worked for the McCormick County Tax Assessors Office. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping and hunting but, most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. His entire family would often gather at his home or his lake house for special events like birthdays, anniversaries, Thanksgiving and Christmas. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through his many family members.
