Obituary

Mr. John Hasselberger III, 75, of Chamberlain Ferry Rd. entered into rest on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at his residence. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m.Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at New Work Baptist Church with Rev. Russell Davis officiating. Interment with full military honors will be at Pine Grove Church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Bain, Earl Elam, Patrick Guin, Vern Kirby, Tom Prince and Tom Schulte. Mr. Hasselberger was born March 17, 1933 in Bronx, NY. He was the son of the late John Hasselberger II and Alice Montogomery Hasselberger. Mr. Hasselberger retired from the United States Navy with 20 years of active service and was an active member of New Work Baptist Church. While in the Navy he served on the USS Chuckawan, USS Aucilla, USS Proteus, USS Salamonie, USS Mississinewa. He also served with the Mobile Construction Battalion #40 in Vietnam, where he earned the Combat Action ribbon and was a TugMaster in New Port, RI, retiring as a Commissioned Warrent Officer. From 1974 until 1996 John started a second career as a launch operator with the Corp. of Engineers at Thurmond Lake. As a young man John rode Brahma bulls in Madison Square Garden. John loved his small farm, pecan orchard and all of his many animals. He was very blessed to have all the kind and wonderful friends that were a part of his life. Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Skinner and husband, Glen and Dorothy Botelho; brother, Billy Hasselberger and wife, Beverly of Danbury, CT.; sister, Phylis Hasselberger Mattice and husband, Robert of Carbondale, CO.; four grandchildren, Dale Skinner and wife, Barbara of North Augusta, S.C., Lee Skinner of Lincolnton, Tammy Caudell and husband, Cale of Winterville, GA., Shawn Botelho and Amy Danner of Augusta, GA.; great granddaughters, Stephany and Bryce Skinner; nephews, Bobby and Johnny Hasselberger of CT. and Scott and Jessie Mattice of CO. and a dear friend, Judy Berkham of Lincolnton. Mr. Hasselberger was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Peggy Creech Hasselberger and a grandson, Jonathan Botelho.
