IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Jane
"Janey" Koone
June 3, 1938 – August 29, 2025
Mary Jane "Janey" Koone, 87, entered into eternal rest on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Madison Heights in Evans, GA.
Born in Washington, D.C., Janey was the daughter of the late Joseph Woodruff Sowell, Sr. and the late Mary Louise Bryant Sowell. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, John Kenneth "Ken" Koone, and her sister, Sonya Sowell.
Janey worked for many years as an administrative secretary at the Social Security Office in Augusta, GA, before retiring to focus on the life she built with Ken. Together, they shared a beautiful marriage filled with love, laughter, and countless blessings.
Janey and Ken made their home in Georgia after Ken's service in the U.S. Air Force, which took them to Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, and Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Wherever life led them, family was always at the center of Janey's heart.
She especially loved spending time with her loved ones at their lake house in Lincolnton, GA. Some of her happiest days were spent on pontoon boat rides, beach trips, dancing with Ken, and going on cruises with friends and family. A wonderful cook, Janey will be remembered for her famous pecan pies, pecan cakes, pepper jelly, and fruit salad. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose selfless love was felt by all who knew her.
Janey is survived by her children, David Kenneth Koone, Sr. of Lincolnton, and Kelly Jean Dixon (Bryan) of Appling; eight grandchildren, David Kenneth Koone, Jr. (Sara), Bradley Aaron Koone (Caitlin), Amanda Nicole Carter (Jon), Haley Christine Montgomery, Connor Beasley Dixon, William Davis Montgomery, Sawyer Walt Dixon, and Brooks Ashley Dixon; five great-grandchildren, Adalynn Koone, Elizabeth Koone, Kaiden Carter, Connelly Koone, and Colson Koone; her sisters, Barbara Carolyn Perry of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Susan Cohen of Columbus, OH; and her brothers, Joseph Woodruff Sowell, Jr. (Valerie) of Alexandria, VA, and Robert Franklin Sowell (Anita) of Cochranton, PA.
A celebration of Janey's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 5,
2025, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church in Lincolnton, GA, with Pastor Bart
Grey officiating. The men of Pine Grove United Methodist Church will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m., at the church.
