LINCOLNTON, GA. - Mr. Maurice R. Spires, 90, of 1906 McCormick Hwy. entered into rest on Friday, February 10, 2012 at Georgia War Veterans Home in Augusta, GA. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, February 13, 2012 at Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Thomas Moon and Rev. Walton McNeal officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Hamilton Dawkins, Dean Cooper, Bobby Burgess, Pat O'Connor, Charles Cason and Sherman Norman. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Norman D. Pursley, Rev. Elton Lawson, Gerald Lawson and Bethany United Methodist Men's Fellowship. Mr. Spires was the son of the late William Henry Spires, Sr. and the late Zackie Wright Spires of Lincoln County. He was a veteran of United States Army serving his country with honor during World War II as a trained mechanic with the 782nd Tank Battalion in Germany. Mr. Maurice retired in 1980 with the Army Corp of Engineers maintenance department and was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Elizabeth Fleming and Mamie Neil Reed, both of Lincolnton; three nephews, Neal Reed and wife, Paige of Lincolnton, Donald Reed and wife, Susan of Martinez, GA., Darrell Spires and wife, Maxine of Augusta; one niece, Susan Laughmiller and husband, Steve of Lawrenceville, GA.; three great nieces and three great nephews.
