Obituary

FLOWERY BRANCH, GA. - Dr. Rebecca Groves Daneman, 80, entered into rest on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at her residence. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Rees Funeral Home with Rev. Addison Belangia officiating. Interment will follow in the Lincolnton City Cemetery. Dr. Rebecca Daneman was born in Lincolnton and is the daughter of the late, William Roy Groves and the late Hattie Blanchard Groves of Lincoln County, GA. Rebecca obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and Biology from Georgia State College for Women, in Milledgeville, GA, and went on to obtain her MD in 1955 from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. This was at a time when few women entered the medical profession. In fact, in 1955 Rebecca was one of only 3 women in her class to obtain an MD. Dr. Rebecca Groves Daneman's career in medicine comes from a long family history. Rebecca was a 4thgeneration physician, following a line of other Groves doctors who also graduated from the Medical College of Georgia. Rebecca Groves was the granddaughter of Dr. William Hammond Groves, and the Groves-May House in Lincolnton is the house he built, along with his accompanying doctor's office where he had his medical practice. The Lincoln County Historical Society currently maintains this house and allows groups to use it, including several Groves family reunions that have been held there. Following her specialization in Psychiatry from Tulane University, Dr. Rebecca Groves married Dr. Emanuel Adams Daneman (also a psychiatrist) in 1961 and moved to St. Simons Island, GA, where she lived for many years, raised her family, and was a practicing physician. In 1975, she moved to Milledgeville and began a long career as a psychiatrist at Central State Hospital. Survivors include two daughters, Susan Daneman Richardson of Watkinsville, GA and Mary Catherine Daneman of Flowery Branch. Susan is married to Andy Richardson and is a research chemist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Mary owns videography business, Daneman Video Productions, Inc. Rebecca has two surviving grandchildren, Kelsey and Drew Richardson, and two grandkitties, Toby and Cali. She also has one surviving sister, Eleanor Groves Bradley of Easley, SC, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Rebecca loved her family and friends, her cats, an occasional margarita, and her Atlanta Braves. You may sign the family's online guestbook at: www.rees-funeralhome.com. Rees Funeral Home, 195 Peachtree St., Lincolnton, GA. 706-359-3222 is in charge of arrangements.
