AUGUSTA, GA. - Mr. William H. Spires, Jr. , 95, entered into rest on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, Georgia. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Bethany United Methodist Church in Lincolnton, GA. with Rev. Walton McNeil and Rev.Thomas Moon officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Donald Reed, Stanley Parton, Greg Dukes, Larry Campbell, Furman Parton and Jim Bowen. Mr. Spires was the son of the late William Henry Spires, Sr. and the late Zackie Wright Spires of Lincolnton, GA. He was retired from DuPont, a veteran of the United States Army Air Corp and was the oldest and a lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church. Mr. Spires was an avid and diehard Lincoln County Red Devil football fan and was honored before the state playoff game with Savannah Christian in 2009 as the oldest living Red Devil football player at the age of 94. He played as a running back on the 1932 and 1933 Red Devil football team. Survivors include a son, Darrell Eugene Spires and wife, Maxine of Augusta; daughter, Susan Pullen Laughmiller and husband, Steve of Lawrenceville, GA.; two sisters, Elizabeth Fleming and Mamie Neil Reed, both of Lincolnton; brother, Maurice Spires of Lincolnton; two grandchildren, Brenton Pullen and Helen Pullen. Mr. Spires was preceded in death by his wives, Elna Gray Spires and Helen Ivey Spires.
